Cannabis Edibles Near El Paso: A Beginner's Guide to Dosing, Effects & What to Buy

Cannabis edibles are one of the most popular product categories at OB1 Cannabis — and also one of the most misunderstood. Every week, our budtenders help customers who've had a bad experience with edibles because they didn't know how to dose properly. This guide is designed to change that.

Whether you're a first-time cannabis user or an experienced smoker trying edibles for the first time, understanding how edibles work is the key to a safe, enjoyable experience.

How Cannabis Edibles Work

When you smoke or vape cannabis, THC enters your bloodstream through your lungs and reaches your brain within minutes. Edibles work completely differently. When you eat a cannabis-infused product, the THC is metabolized by your liver, which converts it into a compound called 11-hydroxy-THC — a more potent form that crosses the blood-brain barrier more effectively.

This process takes time. Depending on your metabolism, body weight, and whether you've eaten recently, edibles can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours to take effect. This is the most important thing to understand about edibles: be patient.

The most common mistake new edibles users make is taking a dose, not feeling anything after 45 minutes, and taking more. Two hours later, both doses hit at once — and the experience becomes overwhelming. Start low, wait the full two hours, and only redose if you feel nothing.

How to Dose Cannabis Edibles

Cannabis edibles are measured in milligrams (mg) of THC. New Mexico law requires all edibles to be clearly labeled with their THC content. Here's a general dosing guide:

  • 1–2.5 mg THC — microdose; very mild effects, good for first-timers or those with low tolerance
  • 5 mg THC — standard beginner dose; mild to moderate effects for most people
  • 10 mg THC — moderate dose; noticeable effects, not recommended for first-timers
  • 20–50 mg THC — high dose; for experienced users with established tolerance
  • 50+ mg THC — very high dose; only for experienced users with high tolerance

If you've never tried cannabis before, start with 2.5–5 mg. Wait the full two hours before deciding whether to take more.

Types of Edibles Available at OB1 Cannabis

Our edibles menu includes a wide variety of product types to suit different preferences:

  • Gummies — the most popular edible format; available in a wide range of flavors, potencies, and cannabinoid ratios (THC-only, CBD:THC, sleep formulas, etc.)
  • Chocolates — premium cannabis-infused chocolate bars and pieces
  • Cookies and baked goods — classic cannabis-infused treats
  • Beverages — cannabis-infused drinks including teas, lemonades, and sparkling waters; typically faster-acting than solid edibles
  • Tinctures — liquid cannabis extracts taken under the tongue; faster onset than traditional edibles (15–45 minutes)
  • Capsules — precise dosing in pill form; slower onset, longer duration

Edibles vs. Smoking: Which Is Right for You?

The right consumption method depends on your goals and preferences:

  • Edibles are ideal if you want longer-lasting effects (4–8 hours), prefer not to inhale smoke or vapor, or want a discreet consumption method
  • Smoking/vaping is better if you want faster onset, more control over dosing, or a shorter duration of effects

Many experienced cannabis users use both — smoking for immediate relief and edibles for sustained effects, especially for sleep or pain management.

What to Do If You Take Too Much

If you consume too much cannabis, you may experience anxiety, paranoia, rapid heartbeat, or disorientation. These effects are temporary and not life-threatening, but they can be uncomfortable. If this happens:

  • Find a safe, comfortable place to sit or lie down
  • Drink water and eat something
  • Remind yourself that the effects are temporary and will pass
  • CBD may help counteract the effects of too much THC
  • Call a trusted friend or family member if you need support
